About

Settled between the Rio Grande and the Nueces River in what is known as the “Wild Horse Desert”, the Jones Alta Vista Ranch was purchased sometime between 1888 and 1890 by rancher William Whitby (W.W.) Jones and his wife, Lou Ella Marsden Jones. The ranch was previously a town, complete with a post office, store and dance hall. Upon purchase, it became the headquarters of the Jones’ South Texas properties — ranch land that stretched over 300,000 acres.

Today, the Alta Vista is still a working ranch and continues to be the headquarters of the Jones family ranches. The original structures of the town and of previous settlements remain standing on the property giving visitors an extremely unique and historical significant South Texas experience. Descendants of W.W. Jones manage the property with an emphasis on conservation and historical preservation.

Driven by a sense of wildlife stewardship and a desire to share the historic Texas property with others, ranch manager and great, great grandson of W.W. Jones, Kevin Avery, coordinates hunting trips/leases and photography trips.
